Q: I love big fruity Australian Shiraz but I would like to try something new. Is there a particular country or grape variety that I should try next to ease me into uncharted territory?
Issue 22 of The Cellar Door (2015) explores strange and unusual grape varieties. These are grape varieties that don’t fall into the varieties we are used to seeing. Because we are creatures of habit, we tend to shy away from new grape varieties that we don’t recognize. In the feature, “The Unusual Suspects,” we de-mystify new and unusual grape varieties by comparing them to the grapes we are used to drinking: Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
